Slovenia submits ‘Breakfast’ for Oscar

Love story is Marko Nabersnik's debut feature

MOSCOW — Marko Nabersnik’s “Rooster’s Breakfast,” centering on forbidden love in a sleepy town, is Slovenia’s entry for foreign-language film in the Academy Awards.

Based on a novel by Feri Lainscek, the film, which is Nabersnik’s debut feature, picked up five major awards last year at the Slovene national film festival including director, screenplay and actor.

The film, which got its first international airing at the 2007 Sarajevo Film Festival, was picked Friday for the Oscars by the Slovenian Union of Film Workers.

The Academy has invited 96 countries to submit films for foreign-language Oscar consideration. Deadline for submission is Oct. 1, the nominations will be announced Jan. 22, and the 81st awards ceremony takes place on Feb. 22.
