Duo team for live-action feature

Bryan Singer’s Bad Hat Harry Prods. has teamed with Radical Pictures to develop a live-action feature from “Freedom Formula,” a five-issue comicbook series created by Edmund Shern.

Radical Publishing is introducing the comicbook at Comic-Con, and it will be released in August.

It’s described as a futuristic “Top Gun” in which racing exo-suits have replaced fighter jets. The story focuses on a genetically engineered racer who learns that his bloodline has the power to change society.

Singer will produce with Radical’s Barry Levine. Jesse Berger, Edmund Shern, Alex Garcia and Michael Zoumas will be exec producers.

Deal marks the second comicbook adaptation this week for Bad Hat Harry, with Singer producing only on each. Warner Bros. and Singer teamed to option the Rob Liefeld-created comic “Capeshooters,” with J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani writing the script.

Deal for “Freedom Formula” is Radical Pictures’ second with a major filmmaker, after setting with Universal and Spyglass its Radical Publishing title “Hercules: The Thracian Wars,” with Peter Berg attached to direct and produce through his Film 44 banner and Ryan Condal scripting a five-comicbook series by Steve Moore.

Along with a film arm, Radical Publishing also has a toy and interactive line and a focus on developing Asian content for the North American marketplace.

Singer sparked to that potential for “Freedom Formula.” Radical is already in talks to expand the comicbook in anime and interactive game formats. The producers will take the project out to studios shortly, they said.

“This is a timeless story about young people struggling to break free of authority. That’s what ultimately appealed to me,” Singer said.

Radical’s Levine said: “There are great setpieces, but this is character-driven.”

Radical Publishing is repped by Endeavor and The Schiff Co., and Singer and his company are repped by WMA and attorney David Feldman.
