'Love' named best film

“The Love of Siam,” a drama about family crisis and gay teen love, took top kudos in Thailand’s Subhanahongsa Awards on Sunday.

Pic was named best film and its helmer Chukiat Sakweerakul (13 Beloved”) took the directing award. Chermarn Boonyasak also collected supporting actress honors.

Another film dealing with homosexuality, “Bankkok Love Story,” won the awards for screenplay, cinematography and sound.

The most numerous kudos haul went to “Muay Thai Chaiya,” for which Akara Amarttayakul and Sonthaya Chitmanee, respectively, were named best actor and supporting actor. It also won for editing, make-up and art direction.

Subhanahongsa Awards are the country’s top movie kudos and are organized by the Federation of National Film Assns. of Thailand. Only films released in 2007 in Thailand are eligible.

As a mark of respect to recently deceased HRH Princess Galyani Vadana event, held in Bangkok’s Siam Niramitr Theater, was lower key than in previous years.
