Russia’s ‘Mukha’ wins in China

Film won Jin Jue award at Shanghai festival

Vladimir Kott’s “Mukha” won the Jin Jue award at the Shanghai Film Festival, which ended Sunday.

Local favorite “Old Fish,” by Gao Qunshu, received the Jury Grand Prix and won the actor nod for Ma Guowei.

It was also a good night for the Czech film “Vaclav,” which drew actress kudos for Emilia Vasaryova and the screenplay nod for Marek Epstein.

Lithuanian Maris Martinsons took the director plaudit for “Loss,” which also drew the music trophy for Andrius Mamontovas.

The Jin Jue jury was chaired by Hong Kong helmer Wong Kar Wai, who stepped in following the death of British helmer Anthony Minghella in March, and also included thesp Joan Chen.

The Shanghai fest was seen as a platform for local film industry players to secure deals, but the Sichuan earthquake on May 12 cast a pall over the proceedings.

Taiwanese helmer Leste Chen’s pic “The Last Rainstorm” won the Most Creative award in the Pitch and Catch section of the awards, sponsored by Variety. Zhu Wen’s “Flash Flash” drew the nod for most potential.

These two projects receive nearly $22,000 in post-production services by Beijing Technicolor Company as a prize.
