Rezo reveals ‘Frozen River’ sales

Company closes deals in San Sebastian

SAN SEBASTIAN — Rezo Films has closed a swathe of deals on Courtney Hunt’s “Frozen River,” adding to the multi-territory pact agreed with Sony Pictures Classics at Sundance.

Deals in San Sebastian, where the pic plays in competition, include Spain (Sagrera TV), Switzerland (Xenix Film Distribution) and Poland (Kino Swiat).

SPC took North America, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand at Sundance, where the pic took the Grand Jury Prize.

Rezo itself has taken France, and also has sold the pic to Benelux (A-Film); Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and the Baltic States (Non Stop Ent.); Portugal (LNK); Greece and Cyprus (PCV); Turkey (Bir Film); South Korea (JinJin); Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam (Suraya Film); India (Alliance); Israel (Orlando Films); the Middle East (Prime Pics); and South Africa (Seed).

Rezo is in negotiation for the U.K., Japan and Italy, said Rezo head of world sales, Sebastien Chesneau.

Hunt’s debut turns on the friendship between a cash-strapped single mom (Melissa Leo, “21 Grams”) and a widowed Mohawk woman (Misty Upham, “Edge of America”), who team to smuggle immigrants across the icy St. Lawrence River from Canada into the U.S.

Winning Spanish pubcaster TVE’s “Other Look” prize at San Sebastian Thursday, ”River” has been one of the best-received competition players to date at San Sebastian.

“There’s talent and sensibility in this portrait of two women worn down by life,” said Spain’s El Pais of “River.”
