'And the Winners Were' will air after awards

Movie-centric cabler ReelzChannel has finalized its Academy Awards-themed lineup, with seven specials in the works — including its first-ever live program.

The schedule culminates with “And the Winners Were,” a spec that will air immediately after the 80th Annual Academy Awards on Feb. 24. “Dailies” host Mike Richards will host the half-hour live event, which will include coverage of the winners and nominees.

“The Academy Awards is our Super Bowl, our World Series, our Breeders Cup rolled into one,” said Terry O’Reilly, ReelzChannel’s new exec VP and general manager. “We spend an entire season following the competition through festivals and awards shows, and this is the big game.”

One set of specials, airing Fridays at 8:30 p.m., will center on nominees, including supporting actor and actress (Friday), actor and actress (Feb. 8), director (Feb. 15) and best picture (Feb. 22).

Sunday night specials at 8 will focus on the Sundance Film Festival (Sunday) and the Producers Guild Awards (Feb. 10).

ReelzChannel will rerun all of the Oscar nominee specials on Feb. 24 from 6-8 p.m., prior to the start of the kudocast on ABC.

“This showcase will provide a little more depth than what you’ll otherwise find on TV,” O’Reilly said. “We’re about being smart. We enjoy the celebrities, but we’re not interested in gossip. Being a smart source about movies, that’s our space.”
