‘Red Cliff’ scales Japan’s B.O. peak

Woo period epic dominates for second week

TOKYO — The John Woo period epic “Red Cliff Part I” has topped the Japanese weekend B.O. for the second week in a row.

On Nov. 8-9 the pic earned $4.125 million on 309,464 admissions for the No. 1 spot. This brings its total B.O. to $18.1 million on 1,478,796 admissions.

According to Toho-Towa, which is co-distribbing the pic with Avex Entertainment, “Red Cliff” will pass the $20 million box office and 2 million admissions marks this week.

No. 2 at the weekend box office was the Toei Animation toon “Yes! Pretty Cure 5 Go Go!” the latest feature entry in the popular fantasy toon franchise for girls. Pic opened nationwide Nov. 8 and earned $1.6 million in its first two days.

Falling to No. 3 was the smash mystery-thriller “Suspect X.” Produced by Fuji TV, the pic held the top slot for four weeks before dropping to second place last week. After 38 days in release, pic has cumed $41.5 million.

The hit Asmik Ace comedy “Handsome Suit” held onto its No. 4 slot for the second week in a row, scoring $4 million on its first 10 days in theaters.
