Festival lines up 11 Asian titles in genre
Asian superheroes will be in the spotlight at South Korea’s upcoming Pusan Film Festival as the subject of one of the event’s many thematic sections.The fest, which runs Oct. 2-10, announced Thursday that it will present 11 movies under the title Superheroes in Asia. Pics include helmer Bhandit Thongdee’s “Mercury Man,” the Thai take on Spider-Man; Yuri Abdul Halim’s “Cicak-Man,” Malaysia’s first pic in the genre; and Indian helmer Rakesh Roshan’s “Krrish.” Other special sections include Ani Asia! A Leap of Asian Feature Animation 3, set to unspool nine toon features. The fest will also highlight Romanian pics, while eight films helmed by Italian brothers Paulo and Vittorio Taviani will be screened at a retrospective. The section called Musicvideos by Asian Film Directors will showcase the work of helmers including Wisit Sasanatieng, Ho Yuhang, Yasmin Ahmad and Yamashita Nobuhiro. The 2008 Asian Omnibus Collection will focus on the recent blooming of films in which a variety of Asian directors including Choi Yang-il, Sakamoto Junji and Yongyuth Thongkongtoon have participated. For the Korean Cinema Retrospective section, one of the key directors from the 1950s, Han Hyung-mo will be honored and six of his films screened, while maverick director Kim Ki-young’s digitally restored “The Housemaid” and an overlooked work, “Ban Geum-ryun,” will be screened to commemorate Kim’s death 10 years ago.
