‘Pies’ on menu at Dutch festival

Documentary to clost Netherlands event

BRUSSELS — The documentary “Bloody Mondays & Strawberry Pies” will close the Netherlands Film Festival, which unspools in Utrecht Sept. 24-Oct. 3.

Directed by Coco Schrijber and narrated by John Malkovich, docu examines the role of boredom in the human condition. Experiences are gathered from a Dutch teen, a Wall Street trader, a desert nomad and a 96-year-old former spy, among others.

Bonanza Films and Ikon produce. Cineart will distribute locally.

Other docus announced for the fest include Heddy Honigmann’s “El Olvido,” a portrait of street life in Lima, Peru. Pic opens San Sebastian’s Horizontes Latinos competition earlier in September.

There’s also Jan Louter’s “The Last Days of Shishmaref,” about an Inupiaq Eskimo community whose island community in Alaska is threatened by climate change.

Both docus will be released theatrically in Holland after the festival via Cinemien Film & Video Distribution.

Fest will open with the world premiere of Robert Jan Westdijk’s “In Real Life,” about a film director playing mind games with his leading lady.

Also making its world preem in Utrecht will be “Radeloos,” a tale of troubled adolescents adapted from Carry Slee’s novel by helmer Dave Schram and scribe Maria Peters. Slee project is the pair’s second after last year’s “Timboektoe.”

Last year’s winner of the Golden Calf for director, Mijke de Jong, will present his latest pic, “Het zusje van Katia.”

Also on the program are “Vox Populi,” by Eddy Terstall, and “Het wapen van geldrop,” by Thijs Romer.
