Palm Springs fest honors Sean Penn

'Milk' actor to receive Desert Palm Award

The Palm Springs Film Festival will honor Sean Penn — again.

Penn will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his perf in “Milk” at the fest’s 20th annual awards gala on Jan. 6. In a first for the event, Penn’s kudo comes a year after the hyphenate pocketed the fest’s helming honor for “Into the Wild.”

Fest chairman Harold Matzner highlighted Penn’s perf in “Milk” as “one of the greatest acting performances in 2008.” Previous Desert Palm honorees include Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicolas Cage and James Stewart.

Mary Hart is set to host the awards. Penn joins fellow honorees Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman, Ron Howard and “Milk” helmer Gus Van Sant, among others.
