Tally slides 5.4% compared to last year

PUSAN – The box office market share of local films in the Korean theatrical market hit 54% in September, the second highest monthly figure this year. But the overall B.O. in 2008 is down on last year.

Data published by CJ-CGV, the nation’s leading multiplex chain, show that only February’s 69% market share for Korean films was higher. The September performance is 11 percentage points higher than August, with a high score driven by strong performances of “The Divine Weapon” and “Rough Cut.”

However, September was a generally weak month and the 1.9 million admissions total recorded by Korean films was a drop of 38% compared with Aug.

Overall theatrical B.O. this year is down 5.4% at 117 million in the nine months to September.

CJ-CGV points to the end of the summer season and comparatively short Chusok public holidays as explanations for the weaker than expected September performance.
