Oscar will Czech out ‘Karamazovs’

Film entered for foreign language category

PRAGUE — The Czech Film and Television Academy has chosen “Karamazovs” to represent the Czech Republic in the race for the foreign-language Oscar.

Pic, written and helmed by Petr Zelenka, is set in a steel foundry in Poland, where a traveling thesp troupe is mounting a stage play of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s classic novel “The Brothers Karamazov.”

Real life mirrors the story: Production actually began life on the stage of Prague’s Na Zabradli Theater in a production by Evald Schorm. More recently it has had a long run at the city’s Dejvicka Theater.

Pic, which stars veteran local thesps Ivan Trojan and Igor Chmela, took home the Fipresci critics’ prize at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in July.

The Academy has invited 96 countries to submit films for foreign-language Oscar consideration. Deadline is Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced Jan. 22, and the 81st awards ceremony takes place on Feb. 22.
