NBR winner for original screenplay seems like “Dirty Harry Gets Old” but turns out to have a soft center after all. Its aged blue-collar protagonist, urban Asian supporting cast and Detroit setting are a bracing change from studio fare. Its unusual treatment of race in America is also refreshing. Helmer-star Clint Eastwood recognized an opportunity to play off his own movie persona.

WHY IT’LL WIN: Acad loves Clint’s taste and skews old.

MAYBE NOT: Far from subtle and sometimes feels rough and unpolished.
