Netherlands fund backs ‘Joy,’ ‘Boy’

Mijke de Jong gets $669,000 to make feature

BRUSSELS — Dutch helmer Mijke de Jong has been given €425,000 ($669,000) by the Netherlands Film Fund to shoot his next feature, “Joy.”

Pic is the story of an emotionally damaged orphan who begins an obsessive search for her biological mother. IDTV Film produces.

De Jong’s previous pic “Tussenstand” (Stages) carried off the Golden Calf for director and actress at last year’s Netherlands Film Festival.

The fund also announced Thursday it was giving $1.27 million to “Sonny Boy,” the new feature from helmer Maria Peters.

Based on a best-selling biography by Annejet van der Zijl, pic tells the story of a married Dutch woman and her young Surinamese lover trying to bring up their child in Holland through the 1930s and into WWII.

Peters’ Shooting Star shingle produces.
