ShowEast Honoree: Al Shapiro Distinguished Service Award
Previous honorees of ShowEast’s Al Shapiro Distinguished Service Award have been champions of children’s causes. So, too, is this year’s recipient, Nancy Klueter.Walt Disney Studios’ longtime VP of exhibitor relations recently wrapped a three-year stint as chief barker of Variety’s Tent 25, the Southern California Chapter of the children’s charity. During that period, Klueter helped launch an eBay auction site that’s raised more than $500,000, and used her Disney ties to enable the org to put Mickey Mouse on its Gold Heart pin in 2001 and Kermit the Frog the next year. “There are a lot of great people who do a lot of great things,” says Klueter. “To be selected is overwhelming.” Klueter became involved with Variety — the Children’s Charity in 1992 when chairman Dick Cook asked her to join the board. “It’s always been founded in show business,” she says. “Because that’s where the roots are, it’s important for every studio to be part of it.”
