N.Y. parties keep fans connected

Inside Gotham's Oscar bashes

Vanity Fair’s after-party pullout may have dimmed the festivities in Hollywood, but New York magazine, Variety and the Acad’s East Coast branch kept the party banners flying in Gotham.

The Academy hosted an upscale viewing party at the Carlyle Hotel’s Carlyle Cafe, which drew Jerry Stiller, Erica Jong, Shirley Knight and Catalina Sandino Moreno.

“I love the Oscars because there is so much drama,” Moreno said. “The whole night it is like ‘Who is going to win?'” She added she had been pulling for Javier Bardem.

Stiller saw it a little differently. “I am not into this competition thing,” he said. The thesp was happy to be in Gotham on the big night. “New York is where it all happened for me,” Stiller said.

Fellow guest, Martin Fisher, co-producer of nominated doc, “Taxi to the Dark Side” extolled the virtues of Gotham. “It was raining too today in Los Angeles,” he pointed out, conveniently not mentioning the below-freezing weather outside.

Guests munched on a five-course meal that was inspired by nominated pics, including “There Will Be Blood” Black Ink Risotto and “Michael Clayton” Dover Sole.

About 30 blocks downtown, at the W New York, Variety hosted a viewing party. An overflow crowd packed the Court lounge for dinner and drinks and watched local boy Jon Stewart on the bigscreen.

Downtown at the Spotted Pig, a hipster crowd gathered for New York magazine’s third annual Oscar bash, where they were treated to nominee-inspired drinks including “Atonement” champagne and a “Juno & Juice” gin cocktail.

Outfitted with flat screens, the pub hosted guests including Eddie Izzard, Alan Cumming, Daniel Sunjata and Phylicia Rashad.

One of the mainstays of Gotham’s Oscar nights past was missing this year as Entertainment Weekly opted to scrap its annual viewing party at Elaine’s after 13 editions. A magazine rep maintained the plug was pulled before the writers strike and reflected a broader promotional rethink.
