Producer/songwriter worked with Patti LaBelle
Music producer and songwriter Sami McKinney died of cardiac arrest Feb. 8 in Los Angeles. He was 50.A memorial will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., Los Angeles. McKinney started in showbiz as a hair stylist, and began songwriting in the mid-80s. He went on to write and/or produce for artists including Patti LaBelle, Nancy Wilson, Anita Baker, Santana, George Duke, Allie Willis and Grover Washington. His most recent collaborations were with Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle. McKinney was a member of ASCAP and NARAS. He also worked on the soundtracks for films including “The Meteor Man,” “Class Act” and “”Do The Right Thing.” Donations to help support his 85-year old mother, his only survivor, may be made to Mrs. Bernice McKinney, c/o Chaka Khan Enterprises, 9100 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 450 East Tower, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.
