Marrakech festival sets eclectic slate

Moroccan, British cinema highlight Nov. event

PARIS — The Marrakech Film Festival, set to take place Nov. 14-22, will celebrate 50 years of Moroccan cinema and pay tribute to British cinema, the late Egyptian helmer Youssef Chahine and Russian helmer Andrei Konchalovsky.

Mohamed Ousfour’s 1958 feature “Le fils maudit” (The Damned Son) will mark the Moroccan film anniversary.

Fest will also unspool 11 films by Chahine, from “Baba Amin” (1950) to “Alexandria — New York” (2004).

British films will be honored with a 40-year retrospective spanning from Lindsay Anderson’s 1968 drama “If” to Ken Loach’s 2006 historical drama, “The Wind That Shakes the Barley,” which both won the Palme d’Or in Cannes.

British masters Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick will be honored through the Flashback section with screenings of cult films “The Birds” and “A Clockwork Orange” respectively.
