Director, studio agree on first look-deal
Lionsgate has signed Tyler Perry to a new three-year first-look deal that calls for the distrib to handle at least three more Perry films.
Lionsgate has distribbed five previous Perry pics dating back to 2005’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.”
Deal was announced Wednesday by Lionsgate co-chairman and CEO Jon Feltheimer and Perry.
The agreement calls for Perry to deliver at least three additional features following “The Family That Preys,” set for release Sept. 12, and “Madea Goes to Jail,” due out Feb. 20.
Lionsgate will also continue to distribute Perry’s DVDs, and two of Perry’s senior development execs will be based at Lionsgate’s Santa Monica HQ.
Lionsgate noted that Perry’s pics have cumulatively grossed nearly $250 million at the box office and sold more than 25 million units on DVD. Lionsgate is also in biz with Perry on the smallscreen, handling distribution of his comedy “House of Payne” in firstrun syndication and on TBS through its Debmar-Mercury TV subsid.
Mike Paseornek, Lionsgate prexy of motion picture production, praised Perry’s “bold entrepreneurial spirit” and B.O. track record.
In addition to “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” Perry pics released by Lionsgate are 2006’s “Madea’s Family Reunion,” 2007’s “Daddy’s Little Girls” and “Why Did I Get Married?” and this year’s “Meet the Browns.”
