Ha Jung-woo, Tsumabuki Satoshi to star

SEOUL — Korean thesp Ha Jung-woo (“The Chaser”) and Japan’s Tsumabuki Satoshi (“Tears for You”) will star in helmer Kim Young-nam’s “Boat.”

Scripted by Watanabe Aya (“Maison de Himiko”), pic centers around two men who are involved with a smuggling business in Japan.

Production is managed by South Korea’s Kraze Pictures and Japan’s IMJ Pictures. Kraze’s Lee Jun-ho and IMJ’s Osamu Kubota are credited as producers.

Each company will provide half of the $2 million production cost. In South Korea, investment company Michigan Venture Capital is attached as a main investor. The firm has recently plunged into the film industry through a partnership with Showbox on “The Chaser” and “GP506.” The Korean Film Council is also supporting the co-production.

Local distribution and international sales companies are not yet confirmed, but Showbox holds priority rights over distribution. Lensing starts June 28 in Japan’s Niigata, with an anticipated theatrical release in the first half of next year.
