Film company sweet on 'Melancholy' drama
IFC Films has picked up world rights to tyro writer-director Barry Jenkins’ drama “Medicine for Melancholy.” Pic will screen in competish at the Los Angeles Film Festival this week and already nabbed the aud nod at the San Francisco fest and cinematography kudo at the Sarasota fest.San Francisco-set love story follows a young black couple in the morning hours after hooking up as they walk the city streets and confront issues of class, identity and race in the rapidly gentrifying urban landscape. The film stars Wyatt Cenac (“King of the Hill,” “The Daily Show”) and Tracy Heggins. Pic was produced by Justin Barber and Cherie Saulter. IFC plans to release “Medicine” in 2009 through its simultaneous theatrical and video-on-demand day-and-date distribution program.
