Ceylan, Ustaoglu, Zaim have new films
A raft of films by award-winning Turkish directors are due for completion before Cannes, giving industry leaders at the European Film Market high hopes for the country’s movies this year.Nuri Bilge Ceylan, director of Cannes special jury award and best actor winner “Uzak” and “Climates,” has just wrapped on a project with the working title “Dreams,” which features Turkish pop star Yavuz Bingol. Yesim Ustaoglu — who made “Waiting for Clouds,” a drama of a woman’s search for her roots — is ready with “Pandora’s Box”, a film that uses a family crisis as the catalyst for exploring the tensions between three fortysomething siblings. “Waiting for Heaven” director Ervis Zaim is in post-production on “Dot,” a movie he shot on HD that will be blown up to 35mm. Reha Erdem, director of “Times and Winds” has finished work on “My Only Sunshine”; Semih Kaplanoglu, whose “Egg” (Yumurta) won awards at Antalya’s Golden Orange and Sarajevo festivals last year, has wrapped “Milk,” which was a project at Cine Foundation in Cannes last year; and “Destiny” director Zeki Demirkubuz has just started shooting a project about women and their love affairs. “We are sure that Cannes will take the Ceylan film — he is very popular with selectors, and we don’t think they can refuse him,” Basak Emre, vice chair of the Ankara Cinema Association told Variety. “Ceylan and his director Zeynep Ozbatur (who also produced ‘Climates’) are not planning to release the film before Cannes,” she added.
