Greenwood Hill Prods. has signed with Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban’s Truly Indie self-distribution company to release its first feature film, “Dalton Trumbo’s Johnny Got His Gun.”The pic, a filmed version of the stage play, stars Ben McKenzie (“The OC,” “Junebug” and “88 Minutes”). Trumbo’s pacifist novel, first published in 1940, takes place in the mind of an American soldier who’s a quadruple amputee without the use of his eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Trumbo directed a film adaptation of the novel, starring Timothy Bottoms, in 1971. “Johnny Got His Gun” was first adapted into a stage play in 1982. Premiere of the pic has been scheduled for Sept. 22 in Austin, Texas, followed by releases in Berkeley, Calif.; New York City; Reading, Pa.; and Los Angeles. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Fallen Patriot Fund, a nonprofit org established to help families of U.S. military personnel who were killed or seriously injured in Iraq. McKenzie, who spoke at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, has been campaigning for Barack Obama.
