Tuesday night’s anti-awards show awards show, aka the IFP’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, was typified by HBO doc maven Sheila Nevins‘ acceptance speech.
Rather than thanking everyone, Nevins gave an extensive list of people she preferred not to thank, including boss Richard Plepler (“he compliments me too much”) and her parents (“I survived them”). Nevins joined Penelope Cruz plus filmmakers Gus Van Sant and Melvin Van Peebles onstage to receive tributes.
Plenty of actual thank-yous were mixed in during the two-hour kudofest at Cipriani Wall Street.
The vast, high-ceilinged former New York Stock Exchange building seemed an odd match for a downtown crowd honoring “Frozen River,” “Ballast” and the like, as did host Aasif Mandvi, “The Daily Show” correspondent, whose riffs landed with a noticeable thud. But the quirk factor was also part of the attraction, as guests lingered longer than in past years, a game few even trickling around the corner to a posh after-party that went well past midnight.
