Co. to market Shyamalan-produced 'Devil'
Former Weinstein Co. sales chief Glen Basner is looking to make a splash with FilmNation, a new foreign sales outfit that boasts deals with Media Rights Capital, financier and producer Endgame Entertainment and Samuels Media.Gotham-based label will be at the American Film Market in Santa Monica this week with its first pic to market, the M. Night Shyamalan-produced supernatural thriller “Devil.” Pic, scripted by Brian Nelson (“30 Days of Night”) and helmed by John Erick Dowdle (“Quarantine”), is the first of three being financed and produced under the Night Chronicles banner, the recently formed partnership between Shyamalan and MRC (Daily Variety, Oct. 28). FilmNation has an exclusive deal to represent MRC’s nonstudio pics, an exclusive relationship with Samuels Media and a nonexclusive deal with Endgame expected to span four or more movies. Basner said the company will handle sales, finance and eventually production. “One of the things that triggers finance is international sales. I can put finance and projects together,” he said. Company, which is still looking for additional sources of funding, will provide “modest” minimum guarantees when taking on projects. It counts private financing from Samuels Media chairman-CEO Steve Samuels, with Basner retaining the controlling interest. “We’ve taken a good look at the marketplace and believe companies can do well if they adjust and get away from the volume business that necessitates four or five new movies every market,” Basner said. Global financial turmoil also means “the interests of sellers, distributors and financiers are now more aligned than ever before.” Samuels said: “I think there is a real need for a new kind of international sales company where there is a strong focus on distribution.” Basner quit as TWC prexy of international at the end of July. Prior to that he was exec VP, international sales and distribution, at Focus Features.
