Ghent unveils Discovery nominees

Up-and-coming composers recognized

BRUSSELS — Five composers compete for this year’s World Soundtrack Discovery Award, to be announced at the Ghent Intl. Film Festival on Oct. 18.

Nominations are Marc Streitenfeld for “American Gangster,” Benjamin Wallfisch for “The Escapist,” Mark Kilian for “Before the Rains,” Velasquez Fernando for “El Orfanato” and Tuur Florizoone for “Moscow, Belgium.”

The Discovery Award celebrates emerging composing talent, alongside the main World Soundtrack awards for established tunesmiths. Past winners include Craig Armstrong, Michael Giacchino and Gustavo Santaolalla.

Local composer Florizoone is already slated to have his work performed at the award ceremony, along with last year’s discoveries Daniel Tarrab and Andres Goldstein.
