‘Funk It’ wins Edinburgh festival

Hip-hop Shakespeare nabs Dress Circle prize

“Funk It Up About Nothin’,” the hip-hop adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” that premiered at Chicago Shakespeare in June, received the Dress Circle Award for musical production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Chicago Shakespeare, which picked up the 2008 regional theater Tony, has also released word that the theater will work with the creators of the show, GQ and JQ (known to their parents as Gregory and Jeffrey Qaiyum), on another bardic “ad-raptation,” this one tentatively titled “MADsummer Night’s Dream.”

The positive critical reception for “Funk It Up” in Edinburgh also adds to the possibility that the show could follow its predecessor “Bomb-itty of Errors,” in which the Q brothers also were involved, to an Off Broadway berth.
