Festival sets Soviet retrospective

Jeonju Fest will also commission digital works

SEOUL — The 9th Jeonju Intl. Film Festival in South Korea will include a retrospective devoted to the five former Soviet republics of central Asia.

The fest, which runs from May 1-9, will also continue its tradition of commissioning a three-part digital work by international directors.

This year’s project will be helmed by Africa’s Idrissa Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso), Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Chad), and Nacer Khemir (Tunisia).

Jeonju’s omnibus films have received wide festival play in past years, with 2007’s “Memories” picking up a jury award at the Locarno Intl. Film Festival.

The event received a record number of submissions this year, with 62 features and 753 shorts from South Korea and 151 features and 223 shorts from around the world.

The festival also announced it will rename its Indie Vision competition to the simpler International Competition.

The central Asian retrospective will screen 12 films, including Rashid Nugmanov’s 1989 film “The Needle,” starring the late Soviet rock legend Victor Tsoi, whose father was Korean.

Kazakh director Darezhan Omirbaev, who participated in Jeonju’s 2006 digital omnibus project “Talk to Her,” will present his classic “Kairat” (1991).

Jeonju will reveal its complete program in early April.

Jeonju and the Puchon Intl. Fantastic Film Festival occupy South Korea’s second tier of international film festivals after Pusan.
