BERLIN — Hoping to boost the success of European cinema in South America, European Film Promotion is offering a helping hand to sales agents in marketing continental pics at the Rio de Janeiro Intl. Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday.
The EFP is supporting nine European films with up to a maximum of E5,000 ($7,370) per film.
Nearly half of the selected titles are documentaries, including:
- Umedia’s “Because We Were Born,” Jean-Pierre Duret and Andrea Santana’s French-Brazilian co-production about two poor adolescent boys in one of Brazil’s deprived areas.
- Wide Management’s “Recycle,” a Dutch-Jordanian-German co-production by Mahmoud al Massad, which follows the life of an ex-Jihadist fighter in Iraq.
- Wide Management’s “Mai 68,” Jean-Luc Magneron’s French docu examining the Paris riots.
- Media Luna’s “9-5 Days in Porn,” German filmmaker Jens Hoffmann’s look at one of the biggest film industries.
EFP’s sales scheme, which is backed by the European Union’s Media Program, is also supporting the promotion of the following feature films in Rio: Media Luna’s “Call Girl,” Antonio-Pedro Vasconcelos’ Portuguese-Brazilian co-production; Rezo Films’ French pics “A Simple Heart,” by Marion Laine; and Eric Rohmer’s “The Romance of Astrea and Celadon”; Memento’s Swiss-French-Belgian co-production “Home,” by Ursula Meyer; and Filmes Fundo’s Portuguese drama “The Northern Land,” by Joao Botelho.
In an effort to encourage networking between European and Latin American professionals, EFP will be hosting an industry dinner at the festival this year bringing together the supported sales reps and other European companies with local buyers.
EFP board member Francine Bruecher of Swiss Films, who will be representing EFP in Rio this year, said South America was important for European film, adding that the EFP’s efforts had supported a total of 59 European productions over the past five years at the Rio fest.
“We have certainly contributed toward making our films more visible on this continent.”
The Rio fest runs Sept. 25-Oct. 9.
