Documentary breaks box office

TOKYO — “Earth,” the feature version of hit BBC nature docu series “Planet Earth,” has set a B.O. record for the genre in Japan.

According to numbers released by Kogyo Tsushin, “Earth” had taken ¥1.78 billion ($16.7 million) as of Feb. 9 after nine weeks in release, beating the previous recorder holder, Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which took $15.9 million in 2004.

Pic, directed by Alastair Fothergil and Mark Linfield and narrated in Japanese by Ken Watanabe, was released on 270 screens.
