Actor fills in for Hall at Variety screening
What: Variety screening of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”Where: Arclight Theater, Hollywood Who: Cast member Kevin Dunn Actor Kevin Dunn admirably filled in for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” co-star Rebecca Hall, pulling himself away from the Phillies-Rays World Series Game 5 (suspended because of rain anyway) to engage in a lively Q&A session following the Monday night screening at the Arclight in Hollywood. His self-deprecating humor deflated any disappointment the audience might have felt at the absence of Hall, one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch this year who was in New York working on a play with director Sam Mendes. “I’m sorry it’s not the beautiful, talented Rebecca Hall,” he quipped to generous laughs from those who remained in their seats after the closing credits. The conversation covered subjects ranging from the script, or lack thereof, in a Woody Allen film. “When I watch his films, it’s really kind of brilliant in a way because it’s so real how people talk to each other,” said Dunn, who plays Patricia Clarkson’s husband in the film. On Allen’s directorial presence, or lack thereof: “You don’t even know he’s there, and sometimes he’s not. Sometimes he’s playing his clarinet in his car.” Dunn said “Barcelona” reminded him of “an Ingmar Bergman movie with laughs. (Allen) takes it to a point and then he kind of pulls it back and puts something in that’s funny.” The film spent three and a half weeks shooting in Barcelona, time in which Dunn became enamored with the capital of Catalonia. “It is an incredible city, so civilized. The food is great everywhere. I’d just get off the touristy streets and eat the best food and take a nap at 4 and go out to eat. That was the best thing because when we finished work we went out to eat at 10 at night. People are just really delightful. I would go back there. I could spend time there.”
