Matsuyama pic at No. 1

HONG KONG — Kenichi Matsuyama starrer “Detroit Metal City,” based on the hit Japanese anime series, took the No. 1 spot at the Hong Kong box office, with $404,000 from 21 screens in its first week of release.

But the weekend belonged to Hollywood hits “High School Musical 3” and “Tropic Thunder” at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. New foreign releases “Saw V” ($196,000), “City of Ember” ($108,000) and indie hit “Smart People” ($42,000) took fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.

The latest entry in Disney’s lucrative “High School Musical” franchise saw takings of $341,000 while adding one screen in its second week for 34 prints in the territory. The film’s Hong Kong cume now stands at just under $1 million.

The Ben Stiller comedy “Tropic Thunder” took a respectable $215,000 in its second frame on 30 screens.

Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” showed surprising legs in its fourth week of release, coming in at No. 7 with $25,000, as did the Ridley Scott-helmed “Body of Lies” at No. 8 with $22,000. The cume for both pics stands at $370,000 and $501,000, respectively.

Not so lucky was the Kiefer Sutherland thriller “Mirrors,” which showed a precipitous drop of 80% in box office takings in its third week, shedding half its screens to register a lackluster $18,000 from 15 prints.

Even with five new premieres occupying top spots, the weekend box office remained flat at $1.47 million, only slightly above the average weekly takings of $1.4 million this year.

No local films made it into the top ten this week, the closest being the Jingle Ma-helmed “Butterfly Lovers,” which edged its way into No.11 with $14,000 from 11 screens.
