Film also wins Best Picture at Hochi Awards
Japan’s foreign-language Oscar hopeful, Yojiro Takita’s “Departures,” an offbeat drama set in the funeral biz, has scooped the most nominations, 13, for the Japan Academy Awards, including picture and director.
Released by Shochiku on Sept. 13, “Departures” has earned $33 million at the local box office.
Yoji Yamada’s “Kabei — Our Mother,” a WWII homefront drama based on the memoirs of helmer Akira Kurosawa’s script supervisor Teruyo Nogami, received 12 noms.
The winners will be announced in Tokyo on Feb. 22.
