Rose's 'Mr. Nice' getting most attention

Four film projects have floated to the top at the Berlinale’s Co-Production Market in the second day of the bustling event.

With 88 requests to talk possible collaborations, Bernard Rose’s comedy-thriller “Mr. Nice,” about a notorious international drug dealer and an undercover British agent, from the U.K.’s Independent Film Prods., boasted the most attention. It was followed by “City Island,” a U.S. family-drama from Raymond De Felitta and Lucky Monkey Pictures, which had 72.

With 68 inquiries each were Jeremiah Chechik’s U.S.-Canadian drama “Lake Erie,” from Echo Lake Entertainment and New Real Films, about a teenager who discovers his father was a serial killer; and “English Rose,” a U.S.-U.K. Talent Campus entry from writer-director Hope Dickson Leach and producer Jennifer Westin, about a girl’s attempts to destroy the reputation of the woman she blames for wrecking her parents’ marriage — the recently deceased Princess Diana.

While mart organizers can only arrange about 30 meetings per project, the overwhelming response to the four titles has made them hot properties.

More than 450 participants are taking part in this year’s event.

Co-Production Market topper Sonja Heinen and her team have scheduled 1,026 meetings from a total of 1,300 requested appointments.

New pics by Agnieszka Holland, Gillies MacKinnon and Deepa Mehta are among the 35 film projects selected for this year’s market.

Enthusiastic participants also turned out on Monday for panel discussions on remakes — led by Canal Plus’ Ron Halpern, Karen Adler of Paramount Pictures (France), and Michael Obel (“Nightwatch”) of Denmark’s Thura Film — as well as animated features and production opportunities in various countries, including the U.S.
