Kenny Chesney nabs seven noms

Kenny Chesney, the reigning CMA entertainer of the year, led the list of CMA nominees Wednesday, garnering seven noms for the 2008 awards.

Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland collected six mentions — five for Sugarland and a solo nom for writing “Stay” — while George Strait received five Country Music Assn. Awards noms and Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley secured four.

Chesney will again vie for entertainer for the year, going up against Strait, Paisley, Sugarland and Keith Urban.

He’s also up for male vocalist, single, video and album plus two noms in the “events” category.

In the album category, Chesney’s “Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates” is up against Carrie Underwood’s “Carnival Ride,” Brooks & Dunn’s “Cowboy Town,” Jackson’s “Good Time” and Strait’s “Troubadour.”

Three tunes are in the single and song categories: Strait’s “I Saw God Today” (written by Rodney Clawson, Monty Criswell and Wade Kirby), Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This” (written by Lee Thomas Miller and Ashley Gorley) and Nettles’ “Stay,” which her band Sugarland recorded.

Jackson’s “Good Time” and Paisley’s “Letter to Me” are also up for song; Chesney’s “Don’t Blink” and Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead” are the other contenders for single.

Nominees Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts were among the artists who announced some of the nominees during a live announcement on Wednesday’s ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The CMA awards are set for Nov. 12 and will air on ABC.
