‘Cliff’ soars at Japanese box office

Woo epic tops opening weekend

TOKYO — The John Woo period epic “Red Cliff Part I” topped the Japanese B.O. on its three-day opening weekend.

“Red Cliff” scored $9.73 million on 845,060 admissions. It bowed on 545 screens, the most of any Asian pic in the Japanese market.

The pic attracted a wide demo, with a 7-to-3 male-female split and a preponderance of over 40-year-olds.

Co-distribbed by Avex and Toho-Towa in Japan, “Red Cliff” now looks likely to recoup for its backers, who invested nearly $100 million in its production.

“Red Cliff Part II” is skedded for an April release in Japan.
