Cineplex Ent. sees revenues rise

Exhibitor B.O. grew 5.2% to $121 million

TORONTO — Cineplex Entertainment, Canada’s largest pic exhibitor, saw second-quarter revenues rise 4.7% to C$209.3 million ($200 million) compared to the same period last year.

Results for the three months ending June 30 were released Wednesday by the Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund, which owns approximately 76% of the chain.

Toronto-based Cineplex’s box office revenue rose 5.2% to $121 million, beating the 1.6% upturn in Canada’s box office reported by the Motion Picture Theater Assns. of Canada.

This was due in part to strong perfs by “Iron Man,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and “Sex and the City.”

Cineplex operates 132 theaters with 1,337 screens.
