Checking in with Carol Burnett

'Horton' hears comedy legend's voice as villain

OVER THE telephone comes the familiar voice of Carol Burnett. We are going to talk about her new movie “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” “So you’re the voice of the villainous Kangaroo?” I ask. Carol rejoins: “Villains never think they are villains. … Kangaroo is sincere. She’s a control freak. She starts a rumor that creates the mob. She’s misled. She has no imagination and is the voice of an uptight conservative. Her mind is not open. She feels ‘if you can’t see it, can’t touch it or feel it, it doesn’t exist.’ So she sets out to destroy what she doesn’t understand. But I don’t mind being called a villain. I’ve acted bad people before — in ‘Annie’ I was Miss Hannigan. And after playing the princess in ‘Once Upon a Mattress,” I ended up years later playing the evil queen in the revival.”
