‘Casablanca’s’ Joy Page dies at 83

Played Bulgarian newlywed Annina Brandel

Joy Page, who played Bulgarian newlywed Annina Brandel in “Casablanca,” died April 18 of complications from a stroke and pneumonia in Los Angeles. She was 83.

Page was the stepdaughter of Warner Bros. studio chief Jack L. Warner, who although he was pleased with her performance, refused to sign her to a studio contract after the 17-year old high school student appeared on screen for the first time in the classic film.

Her character is saved from having to give herself to Claude Rains in exchange for exit visas by Humphrey Bogart, who lets her husband win a roulette so he can buy the visas.

But she continued to act nonetheless, appearing in “Kismet” with Ronald Colan and Marlene Dietrich, “Man-Eater of Kumaon,” “Bullfighter and the Lady,” and “The Shrike.”

Page also appeared on TV shows including “Cheyenne” and “Wagon Train” and retired from acting in 1962.

She is survived by a son, a daughter and a half sister.
