Carl Belfor, projectionist, dies at 55

Chief projectionist for Academy also was an agent

Carl Belfor, chief projectionist for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, died April 23 in Los Angeles after suffering a brain aneurysm in February. He was 55.

Belfor was also business agent for IATSE Local 150, and had previously served as its president.

Born in Monticello, N.Y., he attended Butler U. in Indianapolis, then graduated the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA.

He joined the staff of the Academy in 1991 and became the organization’s chief projectionist in 1999. Belfor oversaw the presentation of thousands of films at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills and its Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, including premieres, Oscar screenings, membership screenings and retrospectives.

He also oversaw numerous complicated clip shows presented by the Academy each year.

In 2007 Belfor accompanied a delegation of Academy members to Vietnam, where he oversaw projection at several screenings that were part of the first-ever American Film Week in that country. On the spot, he built continuous-reel prints from the archival-quality multi-reel prints so films could be screened from the platter projection systems in place in the Vietnamese theaters.

He also helped educate local projectionists, who were hampered by limited knowledge about the tools and techniques of the trade and even more limited resources.

Belfor is survived by his wife Lynn, a brother and a sister.
