The notorious Camorra crime syndicate is selling bootlegged DVDs of “Gomorrah,” the film that mercilessly exposes its activities and is Italy’s hopeful in the foreign-language Oscar race. Camorra members may not like being scrutinized on the bigscreen, but apparently business must go on. Three weeks ahead of the Italo release of the DVD of helmer Matteo Garrone’s film, poor-quality copies produced by the mobsters have turned up in stores across Naples for $7.50. The illegal DVDs are unlikely to circulate far outside the Naples region, though, as they lack the subtitles that most Italians need to decipher the impenetrable local dialect.
