Brent ‘Mud’ Wilson dies at 82

Manager worked with Kings Sisters, Kirby Grant

Manager Brent Wilson, who worked with performers including the King Sisters, actor Billy Barty and Kirby Grant, died Oct. 24 in Los Angeles following a long illness. He was 82.

Known as “Mud” Wilson, he was raised in Oroville, Calif. and started out fronting dance bands before serving in the Army.

He renewed his bandleader career while attending San Jose State U. in the late 40s with classmate and composer/conductor Allyn Ferguson. When MCA tapped him to handle its Bay Area and Pacific Northwest bookings, he shelved his baton to run the San Francisco office, frequently booking local jazz singer Johnny Mathis.

He became a personal manager in Los Angeles, with clients including pedal steel guitarist Alvino Rey, comedian/impressionist Dick Kerr, and the King Sisters. In 1957, he became an original member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

In the mid-60s, Wilson operated the entertainment side of the Sahara Tahoe casino. His later projects included collaborations with trumpeter Al Hirt and Ted Neely.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

A memorial service will be held at Sat. Nov. 8 at noon at the First Christian Church of North Hollywood, 4930 Colfax Ave., Studio City.
