Brazil funds Oscar pic for promos

'Last Story 174' gets cash from Ancine

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s foreign language Oscar hopeful, Bruno Barreto’s “Last Stop 174,” has been awarded 150,000 reals ($70,000) to spend on promotion Stateside by the country’s National Cinema Agency (Ancine).

It is the second year that Ancine has funded the country’s nomination. Last year, it granted the same amount to Cao Hamburger’s “The Year My Parents Went on Vacation.”

“Last Stop 174” had its world premiere in the Toronto Film Festival in September and opened Rio’s Film Festival on Sept. 25. Paramount released the pic in Brazil on Oct. 24.

Plot centers on the true story of street kid Sandro do Nascimento who hijacked a bus in Rio on June 12, 2000.
