Boston Film Fest scales down

Event opens Sept. 12 with 'Appaloosa'

A scaled-back version of the Boston Film Festival will take place outside Boston at Landmark Theaters’ Kendall Square venue in Cambridge, just across the river near MIT. Kendall was used as a satellite site for the fest several years ago without much success.

Trying to bounce back after several years of declining interest and dwindling attendance, the 24th edition of the fest opens Sept. 12 with Western “Appaloosa,” directed by and starring Ed Harris. Local scribe Robert Parker, who wrote the novel on which it is based, will receive the fest’s award for excellence.

Event will close Sept. 19 with “Flash of Genius,” with star Greg Kinnear and first-time director Marc Abraham in attendance. In addition to a number of films that have unspooled in other festivals, Boston will also have several premieres, including Charlie Levi’s “Childless,” starring Barbara Hershey and Joe Mantegna.

A number of docus will also bow, including “Detained,” about an immigration raid in New Bedford, Mass.; “So You All Want Michael Madsen”; “The Spitting Game: The College Hook Up Culture”; and “Courting Condi.”

The fest has been criticized under its current management for doing a poor job publicizing its screenings and other events, but it is hoping to bounce back this year. A full schedule is promised at the website, Bostonfilmfestival.org, by Sept. 2.
