“Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis” has broken box office records in northern France, where the laffer was released a week ahead of its national bow.
Distribber Pathe estimates that the pic took $4.9 million off just 61 screens in six days. The film bowed nationwide on Wednesday on 788 prints.
Helmed by and toplining Dany Boon, “Bienvenue” pokes fun at stereotypical French attitudes about the rain-sodden north, where pic depicts mainly uncouth locals speaking a jargon-filled vernacular.
The opening-day audience of 67,665 was nearly three times that of the Jan. 30 bow of hit “Asterix at the Olympic Games,” which has since grossed more than $54 million nationally.
