Fest mounts joint event with Frankfurt

BERLIN — The upcoming Berlinale Co-Production Market will present 10 book titles as part of its co-operative effort with the Frankfurt Book Fair “Books at Berlinale.”

Covering a wide range of genres, from terrorism and period drama to fantasy and coming-of-age stories, event organizers hope to offer “something for every producer and every budget.”

The presentation is part of the Berlinale and the Frankfurt Book Fair’s third annual Breakfast & Books event, which brings together publishing reps, literary agents and producers to meet for a pitching session, followed by breakfast.

The Feb. 12 event will give interested producers the chance to discuss possible deals with rights holders.

A number of the titles are brand new and will be published in the course of the year, including “The Weekend” by Bernhard Schlink, whose international bestseller “The Reader” is currently being filmed in Germany by Stephen Daldry.

Selected on the strength of their potential for the screen, the titles include:

“The Girl with the Nine Fingers” by Laia Fabregas, Ambo| Anthos publishers, Netherlands

“Baptism” by Max Kinnings, Blake Friedmann Literary Agency, U.K.

“The Weekend” (Das Wochenende) by Bernhard Schlink, Diogenes Verlag, Switzerland

“My Traitor” by Sorj Chalandon, Editions Grasset & Fasquelle, France

“The Court of the Air” by Stephen Hunt, HarperCollins Publishers, U.K.

“The Lady from Buenos Aires” by John Lantigua, Literarische Agentur Mertin, Germany

“Catalina” by Markus Orths, Scripts for Sale, Germany

“Zephyr” by Albert Ostermeier, Suhrkamp Verlag, Germany

Two of the titles will be introduced in co-operation with the Kuratorium junger deutscher Film, which reviews the latest books for children and young adults each year and evaluates their suitability for the screen:

“Through Thick and Thin” by Shirley Corlett, Agentur Graf & Graf, Germany

“The Messenger” by Markus Zusak, Random House, Germany
