BERLIN — Films from 33 countries with 16 directorial debuts feature in the lineup for the Berlinale’s Forum section, which will again focus on experimental and unconventional work from young filmmakers.
The 38th edition of the sidebar screens 36 films in its main program, as well as a three-film tribute to Japan’s Wakamatsu Koji.
Migration and its impact on children is a recurring theme in Forum. Mexico’s “La Frontera infinita” (The Infinite Border) by Juan Manuel Sepulveda is set against the streams of migrants from Central America to the U.S., while Ireland’s “Seaview,” by Paul Rowley and Nicky Gogan, explores the struggles of migrants who reach their destination in Europe, but find themselves stranded in a no-man’s land, North of Dublin, where they are forced to wait for years for their asylum hearings.
Australia’s “Son of a Lion,” by Benjamin Gilmour, is set in Pakistan and tracks a boy who wants to escape a world characterized by violence and archaic traditions. On a related topic, Germany’s Brigitte Bertele, “Nacht vor Augen” (Night Before Eyes), by Brigitte Bertele, is about a German soldier returning from Afghanistan who takes out his trauma from combat on his little brother.
Children are the central figures in three Philippine entries: “Tirador” (Slingshot) by Brillante Ma Mendoza, “Balikbayan Box,” by Mes De Guzman, and “Tribu” (Tribe) by Jim Libiran.
