Genre features among selection

Ten world preems are among 17 titles added to the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama sidebar on Wednesday.

Genre pics feature strongly in the lineup announced so far, including four fantasies: U.S.-Mexican co-production “Sleep Dealer,” helmed by Alex Rivera; Spanish pics “3 dias” (Before Fall), by Javier Gutierrez, and “Eskalofrio” (Shiver), by Isidro Ortiz; and German film “Otto; or, Up With Dead People,” from Canadian director Bruce LaBruce.

Entries from former Berlinale participants include “Det som ingen ved” (What No One Knows), by Soren Kragh-Jacobsen (“Rubber Tarzan,” Kinderfilmfest, 1992) and “Jerusalema,” by Ralph Ziman (“Hearts and Minds,” Panorama, 1996).

Panorama announced 13 titles in late December. These included Madonna’s directorial debut, “Filth and Wisdom,” and Brad Anderson’s “Transsiberian.”

The full lineup for Panorama, including its subsections Panorama Special and Panorama Documentaries, will total around 50 films.

In related news, the Berlinale Talent Campus has launched an initiative on contemporary filmmaking in Africa, Focus Africa.

In cooperation with Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the fest has invited filmmakers including Ghanaian-born docu director John Akomfrah, Nigerian actress Kate Henshaw-Nuttall and short filmmaker Abderrahmane Ahmed Salem from Mauritania.

The campus also will host a session on the influence of hip-hop music on film, “From Street Cred to Screen Credibility — Hip Hop and the Movies.” Guests include Uganda’s Donald Mugisha, whose film “Divizionz” plays in fest’s Forum section; Kevin Fitzgerald, founder of the Los Angeles Hip Hop Film Festival; and Senegalese filmmaker Fatoumata Kande Senghor.

Integrated to this year’s campus theme — screening emotions — is the fest’s sixth Score Competition, which invites young composers and sound designers to submit soundtracks for pre-selected film excerpts.

Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Babel”) will mentor participants and is a member of the jury.
