Disney star's limited 3-D concert tops box office

Friday moviegoers went bananas over Hannah Montana.

Disney’s “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” in digital 3-D won yesterday with an impressive $8.6 million at 683 locations, putting the pic on track to make box office history.

“Hannah” is expected to outstrip this weekend’s widest entry, the Jessica Alba headliner “The Eye,” making it the highest three-day opener for a pure 3-D digital release.

Among those films bowing in less than 1,000 engagements, the opening day for “Hannah” places second behind Fox’s November 2006 title “Borat” which grossed $9.2 million in 837 theaters and ahead of the Spike Lee August 2000 concert pic “The Original Kings of Comedy” which charted $3.9 million from 847 playdates.

Of those pics unspooling during Super Bowl weekend, Sony-Screen Gems 2006 “When a Stranger Calls” touts the highest opening day of $9 million with “Hannah” following close behind.  “Stranger” went on to post a three-day opening of $21.6 million.

“Hannah” also owned yesterday’s best theater average of $12,550.

Lionsgate-Paramount Vantage’s “The Eye” remained the second popular choice among auds with a daily take of $4.9 million at 2,436 theaters.

However, the presence of “Hannah” at the weekend B.O. not only sent last week’s holdovers tumbling, but forced other Friday wide releases to bow outside the top 10.  Few moviegoers found a pulse with the Eva Longoria Parker topliner “Over Her Dead Body,” spending $1.4 million at 1,977 funeral parlors, nor did they find their way to Paramount Classics’ “Strange Wilderness” which grossed $1.3 million in 1,208 forests.

Fox-Spyglass’ “27 Dresses” was one of the few holdovers from two weeks ago to sustain a modest dip.  The romantic comedy remained pretty in third with $2.8 million, off 35% at 2,976 theaters and a current cume of $51.5 million. 

Last Friday’s debuts Fox-Regency’s “Meet the Spartans” and Lionsgate’s “Rambo” both took a 67% dive in their Friday-to-Friday grosses.  “Spartans” inched “Rambo” out for fourth with $2.3 million from 2,643 situations and a running cume of $23.5 million.  “Rambo” collected $2.2 million from 2,764 villages putting its eight-day haul at $25 million.

Another concert pic, National Geographic’s “U2 3D” continued to play to solid crowds, counting $196,000 from 61 hardtops for a current domestic cume of $1.6 million.  Pic boasted the day’s second highest theater average behind “Hannah” of $3,220.
