Al Jazeera English earns Emmy noms

Broadcaster receives recognition from IATAS

Al Jazeera English received its first recognition from the Intl. Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Wednesday, earning two Emmy nominations for international news and public affairs programming.

The Qatar-based broadcaster tied with Brazil’s TV Globo, which also pulled two noms.

Winners in the news and current affairs categories will be announced at a ceremony to be held at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall of Jazz in New York on Sept. 22. Domestic Emmy news and public affairs winners will also be named.

In the international news category, AJE’s coverage of the Myanmar uprising and military crackdown was recognized. In public affairs, AJE’s program “Witness” drew a mention for a segment on radical Islamists inside Pakistan’s Red Mosque shortly before a governmental assault.

Other news nominees were Britain’s ITV News and Romania’s Pro TV along with Brazil’s TV Globo. In public affairs, TV Globo will vie against fellow nominees CBC of Canada and SBS Broadcasting of the Netherlands.
